What to look for in a German Shepherd
If you are considering the purchase of a German Shepherd, or already have one, knowing what qualities to look for is important. Like all pure breeds, each dog will have a set of breed specific traits, but will also exhibit individual personality traits. The following is a list of what to look for in your German Shepherd. You may consider printing this list and taking it with you. This checklist is meant only as a guide, but if you are considering breeding or Showing your German Shepherd, this information is essential.
Quick Tips! - Which Breeder?
When looking for a German Shepherd, it is crucial that you choose a reputable Breeder. Finding and choosing a Breeder may seem difficult, but if you follow these simple steps, you will be able to find a reputable breeder in your area.
In the reference section of this book are the contact details for the American Kennel Club. On their website, they have a section that is devoted to providing information about registered Breeders. If the Breeder is registered, they meet the American Breeders Association standards and hence will be the best place for you to purchase a German Shepherd.
Briefly, however, when looking for a Breeder, do your research first. This ensures that you will make an informed decision about which Breeders you will approach and feel confident knowing that you have chosen well.
Next you should narrow your selection down to two or three reputable Breeders that (hopefully) live in your immediate area and begin researching those in more depth. During this deeper research period, you should write down any important details and do some initial enquiries to check their background and history of service.
You may even decide at this stage to give the Breeders a call and visit them. Always call ahead to find out when they are open and to see if you need to make an appointment. You might like to write down any questions you want to ask the Breeder, prior to visiting them.
Remember, once you visit the Breeder, be vigilant, as you may just melt and want to buy a German Shepherd right there and then. However, you will be better to continue to research all your options, prior to making a decision. You should also consider you budget limits, during your research.
Generally, registered Breeders are very reliable, as they have to adhere to stringent policies and guidelines. These policies and guidelines ensure that you will receive a quality pure breed dog. They are also a good reason why you have made an excellent choice to own a Pure Breed German Shepherd.
Once you have chosen your Breeder and have your budget worked out, you can then begin to look more closely at the German Shepherds available. To help you to learn to know what to look for, we have included some industry standard German Shepherd requirements in the next section of this book.
